Umberin Najeeb, Sarita Verma Award for Advocacy and Mentorship
Umberin Najeeb is the 2017 recipient of the Sarita Verma Award for Advocacy and Mentorship in Postgraduate Medicine. This award recognizes Dr. Najeeb's outstanding mentoring of internal medicine postgraduate trainees, and will be presented at the Faculty’s Annual Education Achievement Celebration on May 15th. Dr. Najeeb was also nominated for the 2017 PARO Lois H. Ross Resident Advocacy Award.

Robert Fowler, 2017 Royal College Teasdale-Corti Humanitarian Award
Working alongside national and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) health care workers at Donka Hospital in Conakry, Guinea, Rob and his colleagues pushed for new clinical protocols for the care of patients with Ebola, which was historically associated with a 70-90% mortality rate. They focused on a much more aggressive, supportive method of care than had commonly been delivered to these patients. This is the kind of care that we take for granted in Canada — fluid resuscitation for severe dehydration, and support for electrolyte abnormalities and organ dysfunctions that accompany critical illness. Rob and his colleagues showed the world that these strategies would help patients survive Ebola long enough for their own body to clear the virus. (Read more)

Amit Oza, Presidential Medal
Dr. Oza is the Head of Medical Oncology and Hematology at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and University Health Network. He is an internationally renowned clinical scientist who has led numerous clinical trials and was instrumental in creating our drug development program, expanding clinical trials in our Centre as well as creating the Princess Margaret Consortium for early phase clinical trials, and redefining the role and leading the Cancer Clinical Trials Unit. He is well known for his expertise in gynecologic oncology and leadership in the clinical research in gynecologic malignancies.
