2017 Oliver Smithies Lecture

Gut Peptides as Therapeutic Targets: 100 Years and Just Getting Started

Presented by: Dr. Daniel Drucker, a Professor of Medicine at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, Mount Sinai Hospital and the Canada Research Chair in Regulatory Peptides and the Banting and Best Diabetes Centre-Novo Nordisk Chair in Incretin biology.

A pioneer in diabetes treatment, Dr. Drucker has provided important insights leading to the development of new drugs for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes and short bowel syndrome. Currently, his laboratory focuses on understanding the family of hormones produced in the pancreas, gastrointestinal tract and brain. His current work may help patients with Crohn’s disease and other intestinal disorders.

Dr. Drucker has received numerous national and international awards in recognition of his research accomplishments and was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2015.
